This home located in the Houston Heights, was our first chance to test our hand at residential mill work in 2003. Prior to this, we solely did custom Arts & Crafts furniture. A good customer who happened to be a contractor, recommended our shop to his client to produce all the trim and custom cabinets in the house.
Needless to say, there was a huge learning curve not only on how to build and install, but also how to bid. The shop basically broke even on this job, but it is our commitment to produce the best possible product no matter what the circumstances.
I do get a chance every now and then to visit this home and after nearly 10 years, the quality still remains. I have seen all too many homes that are not this old and the trim and cabinets built and installed by others has not held up over time. When you want a job done right the first time with a guarantee to last, we are your one stop shop!
Built in 1920, this home was first remodeled by our customer in 2005. We were hired to do all of the trim work and cabinetry throughout the home as well as some of the Arts & Crafts furniture once they moved in. We incorporated a mix of true Craftsman style casings and paneling whereas the cabinets exhibited a bit of a Greene & Greene influence.
In 2010, it was decided to build an addition on to the back of the house to include a master bedroom, bath, closet and utility room. We were hired once again to create the same feel for the new rooms as we did years before.
We bring the same mind set and value to a project like this as we do for our Arts & Crafts furniture. The Quarter Sawn Oak is hand selected for best quality of figure, expertly milled, assembled and sanded, and we even do the staining and finish work ourselves.
A good friend gave us our first opportunity to build a contemporary style kitchen for his home here in Houston. What started out as a standard Shaker design, quickly turned contemporary as we discussed materials to be used and the advantage of using quality veneers.
The veneer of choice for this job was curly, quarter sawn cherry, the curly part offering the wavy look whereas the quarter sawn aspect dictates that the grain runs straight on the face.

One of my favorite parts of this Custom Arts & Crafts Kitchen is the pantry to the right. Instead of building a standard walk unit, the customer wanted something that blended in with the other cabinets to maintain that typical Arts & Crafts look.
The inspiration for this pantry comes from a standard hallway linen closet found in bungalows from the early 20th century. It boasts ample storage behind the doors at top and several of the drawers below have double pull out drawers for extra storage. Probably a more functional use of the space compared to the walk in.

Years ago we had been contracted to build a bathroom vanity for a remodel based on our Boynton Night Table. Upon delivery, the contractor asked if I would step into the kitchen to see if there was anything we could do to help them out with the existing cabinets.
There are plenty of people out there that have a garage full of woodworking tools,
but that does not make them a carpenter even though they make some sort of living from it. The previous carpenter did use cherry for the cabinets but the stain was more like a milk paint than a stain as you could not see the wood. Also, sanding did not seem to be an option as all doors and drawer fronts were very rough with sharp edges.
The customer found a guy who gave them a really good price and then paid us more than that to come in and put a new facade on the cabinet boxes. Moral of the story? Hire someone who knows what they are doing. You will save money and time in the long run.

Not too long ago, there was a surge to reclaim old timbers from dilapidated buildings and have them sawn into lumber for furniture and cabinets. It was kind of a start to the green movement we know today by using existing resources.
This customer is an artist who has always been on the green bandwagon as her art primarily consists of found objects. Every now and then, she will show up at our shop and rummage around for whatever wood scraps she can round up. With these scraps, she creates some very interesting pieces honoring some of the great musicians in blues and rock.
